The Enugu State Government has taken drastic action against businesses who have failed to pay their purchase taxes.

The Enugu State Internal Revenue Service had last year warned that any businesses that do not comply with the law will face consequences.

The affected businesses included Clubs, Hotels, Shopping Malls, Restaurants and Bars with three months unremitted tax.

Speaking shortly after the enforcement exercise, The Executive Chairman Enugu State Internal Revenue Service, Mr. Emmanuel Ekene Nnamani stated that the non-remittance of purchase taxes by businesses is a violation of the Revised Finance Law Cap 77 of Enugu State, and is detrimental to the state’s economy.

Represented by the Head of Department in charge of hotels, Eateries and Bars, Perpetual Egwuonwu, he warned that businesses who fail to comply with the law will face further penalties.

“I urged all businesses in the State to remit their purchase taxes in a timely manner, in order to ensure that the government can continue to provide essential services to the people.”

” I regret the attitude of some business owners, even after several meetings and enlightenment programmes organized for them.

This enforcement is to compel the defaulters to do the needful as the state government is out to collect every kobo accrued to it in the firm of purchase tax of four months.”

Mr. Nnamani called on all businesses in Enugu State to fulfill their civic duty by paying the necessary taxes, based on the assessment provided by the ESIRS.

He noted that these taxes are essential for the functioning of the state government and for providing essential services to the people.

Nnamani emphasized that by paying their taxes, businesses are not only meeting their legal obligations, but also contributing to the common good and helping to create a more equitable society, adding that the business community has been a valuable partner in this endeavor.

According to him, the current administration under Governor Peter Mbah has made increasing the state’s internally generated revenue (IGR) a top priority, with the goal of improving the lives of the people of Enugu State.

The chairman noted that the government has been working diligently to streamline tax collection and improve efficiency, with confident that these efforts will bear fruit.

He also stressed that the state government is committed to using tax revenue to fund critical infrastructure projects and social programs that will benefit all residents of Enugu State.
