Nigeria labour Congress the NLC, has accepted a N70,000 minimum wage proposal from President Bola Tinubu after extensive negotiations to balance worker interests with economic realities.

The acceptance of the N70,000 minimum wage by the NLC is a significant milestone in the ongoing discussions about improving the welfare of Nigerian workers,says the NLC president.

“With this agreement, there are hopes that the proposal will be presented to the National Assembly and ratified, marking a new era of improved standards of living for the Nigerian workforce.”

However, the successful implementation of the new minimum wage will depend on the government’s ability to generate the required revenue to sustain it and on the cooperation of employers, especially in the private sector.

As he addressed the media, NLC Chairman Joe Ajaero explained the rationale behind their decision to accept the minimum wage proposal, stating that “we understand the economic realities of our country, and we believe that this is a good starting point for improving the welfare of Nigerian workers.

We urge the government to ensure that the proposal is implemented in good faith and that necessary measures are put in place to prevent any exploitation of workers.”
He went on to emphasize the importance of regular reviews of the minimum wage to keep pace with inflation and maintain a decent standard of living for workers.
