The Ebonyi State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Engr Jude Okpor has assured residents of Abakaliki and environs that the multi-million billion naira Oferekpe mega water scheme will soon supply water to the city.

Okpor made disclosure while addressing newsmen on Friday after inspecting work at the project situated in Ikwo Local Government Area of the state.

The project was constructed by the Elechi administration but has not commenced operations since then.

The Nwifuru administration revived it and the people have been expecting to see it operate at full capacity.

Okpor said the present administration had invested more than N200million to reactivate the water scheme.

“When the scheme was completed in 2018, equipment inside it were vandalised making it not in use.

“The present administration has reactivated the scheme as almost all its automation were vandalised and looted.

“This scheme is now at its full operational level and our only challenge is to make sure that the pipeline from the water scheme to the reservoir in Abakaliki is free.”

The Manager of the Water Scheme, Eric Alobu said that water currently being pumped into the scheme comes from the river connected to it.

“The scheme has processed one of the finest water so far.

“The last time the scheme worked was in 2018 when it was completed and we are happy to announce that it can operate optimally now.

“There was a problem before now and that was the chemical outline was not working but this present intervention has captured it,” Alobu said.
