A Professor of Development Economics and former Director of Institute for Development studies at the University of Nigeria Nsukka, Professor Osita Ogbu, has sounded a clarion call for greater professionalism in the media industry.

Speaking as a guest lecturer at the 2024 Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Enugu state council, Press Week, he urged for the establishment of an Institute of Chartered Journalists to ensure high standards and credibility in the profession.

Professor Ogbuu emphasized the pressing need to separate “quacks” from genuine professionals, arguing that the proliferation of unqualified and unprofessional journalists undermines the credibility and effectiveness of the media industry.

“Journalism is a noble profession, and we must safeguard its integrity. The proliferation of unprofessional journalists not only erodes public trust but also poses a threat to the democracy we cherish. We must distinguish those who are qualified and ethical from those who are mere ‘quacks’ in our profession. Therefore, I urge the Nigeria Union of Journakists NUJ to establish an Institute of Chartered Journalists to ensure high standards and credibility in journalism.”

The guest lecturer further stressed the importance of a well-regulated media industry in safeguarding democratic values, promoting accountability, and fostering informed citizenry.

Comrade Sam UdeKwe, in his capacity as the Chairman of the NUJ Enugu State Council, delivered an impassioned speech during the event, highlighting the vital importance of journalism in safeguarding democracy, promoting accountability, and contributing to societal growth and progress.

The Chairman emphasized the need for journalists to maintain the highest standards of professionalism and ethics in their work, reiterating the importance of accuracy, fairness, impartiality, and objectivity in upholding public trust and fostering a more informed society.

He also highlighted the urgent need for journalists to leverage innovative approaches and technology responsibly, ensuring that their reporting is inclusive and representative of diverse perspective.

With a keen focus on nurturing the next generation of journalists, Comrade Sam UdeKwe stressed the need for ongoing training and capacity building, equipping young reporter.

Speaking to newsmen, the chairman organizing Committee Mr Emmanuel Jonathan said “Our guest lecturer, Professor Osita Ogbu, has eloquently and passionately articulated the importance of professional and academic advancement in journalism. “His message today challenges us all to continue acquiring knowledge and honing our skills so that we can report on society with accuracy, depth, and sensitivity.

By doing so, we ensure that our profession remains relevant, trusted, and vital to the health of our democracy.”Mr. Emmanuel Jonathan.

Meanwhile, the governor of Enugu state, Dr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah who received an award during the event commended the crop of journalists practicing in the state.

Represented by the commissioner for youths and sports, Mr Lyoid Ikechukwu Ekweremadu he said ” you are covering events and giving us checks and balances needed for good governance.

The award speaks to the recognition of his Excellency’s disruptive innovation in terms of delivering governance to Ndi Enugu. There is no doubt that journalists are aware of all the infrastructure development this government has brought in Enugu. This award will spur his Excellency to do more.

Other people who were honoured include Sen. Osita Ngwu, representing Enugu West senatorial Zone and Prof. Paul Nnamchi, member representing Enugu East/Isi Uzo Federal Constituency.

The weeklong event with the theme “Journalism in a Developing Economy” started with a thanksgiving service.
