Relief is on the way for tenants in Enugu State as the State House of Assembly has introduced a bill to regulate agency fees and caution fees. This move is aimed at protecting tenants from exploitation by landlords and agents, and promoting a more equitable and sustainable housing market in the state.

The bill, which is sponsored by Hon. Okey Mbah, representing Nkanu East constituency, was read for the first time on Tuesday, February 25, at the Enugu State House of Assembly.

The proposed legislation seeks to cap agency fees at 10% of the rent, providing much-needed relief to tenants who have been burdened with excessive fees. Additionally, the bill aims to abolish caution fees, which are often non-refundable and unfair to tenants.

This development comes on the heels of protests by residents in Enugu State against high rents and excessive fees charged by lawyers and agents. The protesters called on the state government to intervene and regulate rents and fees in the state.

With this bill, the Enugu State House of Assembly is taking a significant step towards protecting the rights of tenants and promoting affordable housing in the state.
