Nigerian Gov’t Screens Ugwuanyi, Omokri, Ikpeazu, Others for Ambassadorial Appointments

The Federal Government of Nigeria is currently screening nominees for ambassadorial appointments, aiming to fill vacancies in 76 embassies and 22 high commissions worldwide.

This move marks a significant step toward restoring Nigeria’s diplomatic presence globally.Nominees Undergoing Screening include Former Governor of Enugu State Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Former Governor of Abia State, Okezie Ikpeazu, Former Presidential Aide, Reno Omokri and Shehu Sani Former Senator (Kaduna Central).

Others are Femi Pedro, Former Deputy Governor (Lagos State) and Femi Fani-Kayode Former Minister of Aviation. According to sources, these nominees are undergoing background checks and submitting their educational and employment records. The screening process is part of the government’s effort to fill diplomatic roles left vacant since the recall of all Nigerian ambassadors in September 2023.

The information gathered from the screenings is being shared with relevant agencies within the Presidency and the National Assembly as part of the final vetting process. Official announcements regarding the new ambassadors and their postings are expected in the coming weeks.

Speaking on the delays, Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Tuggar cited funding challenges as a major setback in appointing new ambassadors. However, with the current momentum, official announcements regarding the new ambassadors and their postings are expected in the coming weeks.

This development comes amid growing concerns from international partners over the lack of Nigerian representation in several key diplomatic missions.
