Legal luminary and teacher of law, Dr Okpara Okpara is dead.

Dr Okpara died on the 7th of this month in Abakaliki, according to a statement by his son, Samuel Nnabuike Okpara.

Born on September 25, 1945, Dr Okpara was one of the pioneer graduates in his community, Amasiri, in Afikpo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

At various times, Dr Okpara was on the Board of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC; South East Zonal Representative of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP; and Dean Faculty of Law, Ebonyi State University.

As an academic, Okpara has many books on law and jurisprudence to his credit.

The include: The Holy Bible and The Nigerian Law, Medical Jurisprudence Vol 1 & 2, HIV/AIDS & THE LAW, Human Rights, Latin Words commonly used in Law and The United Nations Today.

As a community leader, Okpara was a trail blazer, a role model to many, a social mobilizer, and an unapologetic promoter of the community’s traditions and culture.

The statement by his son reads in part:

“The Okpara family, in conjunction with the Amasiri community and well-wishers across Nigeria and in the Diaspora, announce with deep sorrow, the passing of our beloved patriarch, Dr. Okpara Okpara, who transitioned peacefully to eternal rest.

“Dr Okpara Okpara was not only a man of wit and compassion but also a revered cerebral mind who held the distinguished title of Omezue – the highest traditional honour in Amasiri, Afikpo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

“His life was marked by decades of committed service, mentorship, and cultural stewardship.

“In celebration of his remarkable life and legacy, the burial arrangements are as follows:
Friday, November 28, 2025 – Wake (An evening of tributes and reflections),
Saturday, November 29, 2025 – Funeral Service & Interment, Sunday, November 30, 2025 – Thanksgiving Service.

“All events will be held in Amasiri, Afikpo LGA, Ebonyi State.

“The Okpara family extends heartfelt appreciation to all who have expressed their condolences and support during this period. We humbly ask for your continued prayers as we navigate this moment of profound loss,” the statement concluded.
