Obinna Ogbuka has emerged as the new Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Enugu State Council. His emergence was unopposed following the decision of the incumbent chairman, Sam Udekwe, to withdraw from the race.

The election, held recently at the NUJ Press Center, Enugu, also saw the emergence of other key officials. Comrade Chinedu Adonu of Vanguard Newspaper defeated Regis Anukwuoji with 115 votes to become Vice Chairman. Suleiman Onyeama of the Ministry of Information secured 123 votes to defeat Ifeoma Amuta and was elected Secretary.

Other elected officials include:

• Fred Nnaji (ESBS) – Assistant Secretary (unopposed)
• Stephanie Ude (Federal Information) – Treasurer, defeated Chinyere Agbo
• Sandra Ukeje (Solid FM) – Financial Secretary, defeated Adaku Agbara
• Florence Ani (State Information) – Auditor, defeated Uchenna Nnamele

In his acceptance speech, Ogbuka described his victory as the beginning of a new chapter for the union. He promised to prioritize members’ welfare, foster unity, and work towards the growth and relevance of the NUJ in Enugu State.

“My emergence as Chairman is to serve the interest of all professional journalists in the state,” he said. “NUJ will be a beacon of hope to all members. A new NUJ is possible.”

Ogbuka thanked the electoral committee for conducting a free, fair, and credible election.

Representing the NUJ National President, Comrade Eze Adiukwu, acting Zonal Secretary of NUJ Zone C, praised the peaceful conduct of the exercise. Chairman of the electoral committee, Mr. Sabastine Okafor, also described the polls as transparent and fair.

While many members expressed optimism about the new leadership, others urged caution and accountability.

“We’ll be watching closely to see how he performs,” said Comrade Maureen.
