More Nigerians have strongly condemned the decision of Bariga Local Government in Lagos to rename the popular Charlie Boy Bus Stop in the area.

Latest critics include Senior Advocate of Nigeria and human rights activist, Femi Falana, another popular activist, Omoyele Sowore and Charles Boy himself.

Last week, the name of Charly Boy was erased from the bus stop and changed to that of Nigerian rapper, Olamide Adedeji popularly known as Badoo.

The council chairman, Kolade David, whose tenure ended on Friday, announced the renaming of the bus stop, stating that the move was part of efforts to honour individuals who have brought pride to Bariga and contributed to Nigeria’s global image through their craft and contributions.

“As an administration, we took our time to reflect on a number of our people who have put the name of our local council out on the global map through their respective God-given talents and craft, as well as eminent personalities in our nation and our beloved state and local council who have contributed immensely to the development of our nation and our state. Today, we will be officially renaming streets in honour of the legacies.”

In his reaction, Falana faulted the action, describing it as unconstitutional.

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria wrote:
“Charley Boy bus stop acquired its name sociologically due to its functionality and the positive impact which Charley Boy has historically made in the area”.

On his own part, Omoyele Sowore flagged the ethnic and political undertones of the action, describing it as “a spiteful rewriting of history meant to silence dissent and discredit voices that have long challenged authoritarianism.”

The veteran entertainer Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, knocked the Bariga Local Council Development Area, accusing it of acting out of fear and political insecurity.
