‎The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Women Committee in Enugu State has re-elected Comrade Ugwu Rosemary Ukamaka (JP) as its chairperson, with all candidates running unopposed. This development underscores the confidence and trust the women have in Comrade Ugwu’s leadership.

‎In her Welcome speech, Comrade Ugwu emphasized the importance of accelerating action towards achieving gender equality in the workplace. She highlighted that a new NLC gender policy is imperative to drive progress and ensure social justice.

‎”Accelerating for achieving gender equality and imperative for a new NLC gender policy. Gender equality remains a cornerstone of sustainable development, social justice and economic progress,” she stated.

Comrade Funmi Fassan, the National Vice Chairperson of NLC Women Commission, also addressed the gathering.

‎Comrade Funmi Fassan who is the returning officer, encouraged the women to always conduct themselves professionally while proving their capabilities in different endeavours.

‎The NLC Enugu State Chairman, Comrade Fabian Nwigbo, praised the women for their tireless efforts in various sectors. “I want to express my deepest appreciation to the women of Enugu State for their tireless efforts in various sectors, from education and healthcare to entrepreneurship and leadership. Your dedication and hard work are the backbone of our society,” he said.

‎He encouraged the new Chairperson to carry along, members of her executive “you can disagree but when you see reasons agree and move on”.

‎The re-elected chairperson and her team are expected to drive the agenda for gender equality and women’s empowerment in the state. With this renewed mandate, they are poised to make significant strides in promoting women’s rights and interests.

‎Other executive members include Comrade Mercy Nneka Ugwuodo, Vice  Chairperson, Comrade Chika Judith Nwafor, Secretary, Comrade Joy Ukamaka Onoh, Assistant Secretary, Comrade Ezinne Grace Anih and Comrade Chioma Stella as Ex-Officio members. ‎Also, Comrade Ijeamaka Onoh was co-opted as Ex-Officio to join the executive.

‎Meanwhile, two contestants were disqualified for various reasons ranging from inability to professionally fill the form to emanating from a branch unit instead of a state Union.

It was observed that a contestant from Non Academic Staff Union, (NASU) was a branch treasurer and by the electoral guideline of NLC, anyone who must contest the election must be a state officer of her union, which she was not.

‎Comrade Funmi who addressed the house on the development called on the winners to accomodate everyone while the administration lasts.

‎Highlight of the event was good will messages from different bodies like Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, Trade union Congress Women Commission (TUC),Nigerian Union of Pensioners NUP, Medical and Health Workers Union, Nigeria Union of Journalists NUJ, among others.

In another development, a disturbing incident occurred where chaos broke out in the hall. It was alleged that some individuals, suspected to be supporters of candidates disqualified, especially the one who contested for chairperson with comrade Ugwu, sponsored and instigated the disruption where their gang leader threatened the life of the returning officer, Comrade Funmi Fassan. The crises was also seconded by construction union who was alleged backbone to those igniting the chaos.

The situation escalated, causing a commotion among attendees and disrupting the proceedings. However, it was later brought under control by some officials led by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) State Chairman, Barr. Fabian Nwigbo, who intervened to restore order and calm.The swift intervention by the NLC leadership helped to prevent further escalation and ensured the event continued with minimal disruption. Their efforts were widely appreciated by attendees and organizers alike.

‎The theme of the event Which was Accelerating Action for Achieving Gender Equality, brought together women from various sectors to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment through unionism.
