On Wednesday, December 17, 2025, the Enugu State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) led a city‑wide demonstration to demand urgent government action against the surge in terrorism, banditry and kidnappings that have left citizens feeling unsafe.

The protest, organized by NLC Chairman Comrade Fabian Nwigbo, saw hundreds of workers, students, teachers and traders marching through Enugu’s major streets, bringing traffic to a standstill for several hours. Demonstrators chanted slogans such as “Another challenge! Another challenge!!” and carried placards reading “Nigeria is bleeding,” “End terrorism, banditry and kidnapping now,” and “Poverty fuels insecurity—create jobs, support local industries.”

In his address, Nwigbo expressed grave disappointment at the state of security in Nigeria, noting that “cows are safer than humans” and that no one—not even security personnel—is safe anymore. He highlighted how insecurity affects every sector of society—students, teachers, workers, farmers, travelers and political figures—and called on the government to move beyond rhetoric to decisive action.

The NLC’s demonstration follows a recent National Executive Committee meeting where the union resolved to raise awareness of the worsening security crisis. Participants also urged the protection of schools and the creation of employment opportunities to address the root causes of violence.

The protest underscores the growing demand for effective security measures and economic policies that tackle poverty and unemployment, issues the union says are central to restoring peace across Nigeria.
