Enugu State Governor, Dr Peter Mbah has promised that his administration is ready to engage with the Nigerian Legion in order to find areas where the Legion is in dire need of assistance.

The governor gave the assurance on Tuesday during the official unveiling and launch of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day emblem held at the Michael Okpara Square, Enugu.

Our government house Correspondent Fred Nnaji reports that Mbah, represented by his Deputy, Barr Ifeanyi Ossai, commended those who generously donated and extolled the sacrifices of the Armed Forces in the service of the country.

Earlier the Chairman, Nigerian Legion Enugu State Council, Dr Emeka Igwesi said the Nigerian Armed Forces have at various times engaged in a number of military operations and activities, within and outside the country, noting that in all those military operations, a good number of the soldiers voluntarily laid down their lives in the service of the fatherland.

While pleading with the governor to make use of the members of the Legion, Dr Igwesi said the military veterans are highly disciplined and experienced, and many are still strong to contribute in the development of the state, stating that the body also has its sub-body called Corps of Commissionaires who are well-trained and young ready to serve.

The Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration, which is an annual event, is a period set aside in memory of the fallen heroes and heroines who laid down their lives in the service of their fatherland. It is also a period to keep faith with the dependants they left behind. It is moreso in honour of the veterans, the living heroes, particularly those who were wounded in wars, the infirmed and maimed, the aged, sick and bedridden, amongst others of which majority are in dire need of the society’s recognition, help and support. It is further a period to enliven the spirit of the gallant men and women who are still in active service.
