Gov. Mbah Turns Abandoned Projects into Enugu’s New Powerhouses

‎By Prince Eje Josh

‎Since taking office, Governor Peter Mbah has transformed Enugu State from a graveyard of abandoned projects into a hub of thriving infrastructure, proving that leadership means finishing what others left behind.

‎Governor Peter Mbah has become known as the governor who inherited a legacy of unfinished and abandoned projects from every administration since 1999 and instead of adding to the list, he’s been completing them. From the International Conference Centre (ICC), untouched since Chimaroke’s tenure in 2007, to Hotel Presidential, which lay moribund since 2012-2013, Mbah has breathed new life into Enugu’s infrastructure. Over half of the new secretariat built by former Governor Sullivan Chime had stalled for years, but under Mbah, it’s now a work in progress.

‎ESUT, once neglected, is now seeing massive upgrades, while SUMAS Teaching Hospital in Igbo-Eno and other projects there are being completed. Long-forgotten assets like Niger Gas, Enugu United Palm Products and Sun Flour Mill are being revamped, creating jobs and boosting internally generated revenue (IGR) without raising taxes.

‎Healthcare has seen a revolution: Type-3 centers in Uzo Uwani, Nara and Agwu have been remodeled and equipped, Nsukka General Hospital has been revitalized and the Government House Clinic now rivals world-class facilities. Water projects from Nsukka’s public water scheme to Ajali and Oji River Waterworks are back online while Nike Lake Resort and Ngwo Pine Forest are thriving again.

‎Even tourism sites like Awhum Waterfall and Akwuke Beach are being restored, and major economic projects like the Enugu International Spare Parts Park and Awgu Games Village are taking shape. “The increase in IGR isn’t from higher taxes but from blocking leakages and making smart investments,” a source close to the government noted, pointing to assets like Enugu Air and Hotel Presidential now contributing to revenue.

‎Governor Mbah’s approach shows that governance is about completion not abandonment. As one resident put it, “He’s turning Enugu’s ruins into riches, and tomorrow is truly here.”
