The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Enugu State Chapter, strongly condemns the horrific killing of 19-year-old Uloma Nwangwu, allegedly murdered by her 51-year-old cousin, Emeka Nwangwu, in Nsukka, Enugu State.

In a statement e-signed by the chairperson Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ Enugu state, NAWOJ views this case as a heartbreaking example of prolonged sexual violence, domestic captivity, intimidation, and system failure.

According to police reports, the deceased had earlier petitioned authorities on 28 November, alleging that the suspect had abducted, sexually abused, and repeatedly threatened her life since she was 13 years old. Despite escaping and reporting to the police, Uloma was tragically attacked again while receiving treatment at a pharmacy, where the suspect allegedly assaulted her and smashed her head on the floor, leading to her death.

The fact that this young woman sought help days before her death makes the tragedy even more painful and unacceptable.

We commend the Enugu State Police Command for the swift arrest of the suspect and urge the State Criminal Investigation Department to pursue this matter thoroughly and ensure full prosecution without interference or delay.

NAWOJ Enugu also calls on Security agencies to intensify efforts in responding promptly to cases of gender-based violence,
Community leaders and families to reject the culture of silence, cover-ups, and “spiritual settlements” in cases involving sexual abuse and threats to life.

The Enugu State Government and relevant support agencies to provide stronger protection systems for vulnerable girls and women.
